# Network Fee or Spread: Which Dominates at Which Size

> One is flat and one is proportional. The crossover point decides which one to optimise, and it is lower than most people assume.

Two costs behave differently with size. Knowing where they cross tells you which one to bother optimising.

## The shapes

A network fee is flat. Three dollars is three dollars whether the transfer is fifty dollars or fifty thousand.

A spread is proportional. Half a per cent is half a per cent at any size.

## Where they cross

At a half per cent spread and a three dollar network fee, they are equal at six hundred dollars. Below that, the network fee dominates. Above it, the spread does.

Change the inputs and the crossover moves, but the arithmetic is one division and worth doing for your own numbers.

| Spread | Network fee | Crossover |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 0.1% | $1 | $1,000 |
| 0.5% | $3 | $600 |
| 1.0% | $3 | $300 |
| 1.0% | $0.20 | $20 |

## What this means for small transactions

Below the crossover, the choice of network is the whole decision. A cheap chain turns a three per cent cost into a tenth of that, and no venue's fee schedule can compete with that effect.

Optimising the spread on a hundred dollar transfer is optimising the smaller number.

## What it means for large ones

Above the crossover, the network becomes irrelevant and the spread is everything. Paying five dollars instead of twenty cents to move fifty thousand dollars is a rounding error; paying an extra half per cent is two hundred and fifty dollars.

At that size the question is whether the venue quotes competitively for the full amount, which is a different question from its retail rate.

## The common mistake in each direction

Small transactors obsessing over venue fees while using an expensive network. Large transactors choosing a venue on its network fee table while accepting a wide quote.

Both are optimising the wrong column for their size.

## What to check

Your own typical transaction size, then the crossover for the venue you use. [Exchanges that price the network fee separately from the spread](https://collectnexchange.cy/services/swap) make that calculation possible at all; venues quoting one blended number do not.

For sizes above the crossover, [a venue with a published conversion schedule](https://collectnexchange.cy/services/crypto-exchange) and a quote that holds is worth more than any network saving. Below it, [Collect & Exchange, where the quote holds for the whole amount](https://collectnexchange.cy/), still matters less than picking the cheap chain.
