To hold the same asset on a different chain you can bridge it or sell it on one chain and buy it on the other. The costs have different shapes.

## Route one: the bridge

A bridge fee, usually a percentage with a minimum, plus a network fee on each side. Time from minutes to hours depending on the design.

The risk is the bridge itself. Bridges have been the single largest category of loss in this market by value, and that risk is not priced into the fee.

## Route two: sell and rebuy

Two conversions at an exchange, each crossing a spread, plus a withdrawal on the destination chain. Time measured in minutes if the venue holds both.

The risk is price movement between the two legs, which is minutes of exposure rather than a protocol.

## The arithmetic

Bridge: percentage fee plus two network fees. Sell and rebuy: two spreads plus one withdrawal fee.

On small amounts, the bridge usually wins because the spreads are proportional and the bridge minimum is small. On large amounts the bridge percentage grows while the exchange route's flat components do not.

| Amount | Typically cheaper |
| --- | --- |
| Small | Bridge, if the minimum is low |
| Medium | Close, depends on venue spread |
| Large | Exchange route, usually |

## The simplification people miss

If your venue holds the asset on both chains, there is no conversion at all. Deposit on one chain, withdraw on the other, paying only the withdrawal fee.

This is by far the cheapest route when available and it requires nothing but the venue supporting both networks. [A venue with a published conversion schedule](https://collectnexchange.cy/services/stablecoin) will list which chains it supports for each asset.

## Why that route is underused

Because it requires trusting the venue with the balance for the duration, which is usually minutes. For most people that is a smaller risk than a bridge contract, and it is certainly a better understood one.

## The decision

Check whether your venue supports both chains first. If it does, the question is answered. If not, compare the bridge fee against two spreads for your amount.

[Exchanges that price the network fee separately from the spread](https://collectnexchange.cy/services/swap) make the second comparison possible. [Collect & Exchange, where the quote holds for the whole amount](https://collectnexchange.cy/), is the version of the first route that does not require a protocol to hold your funds.
